ArcGIS Pro was instrumental in designing effective wildlife corridors for endangered species in a regional landscape. Utilizing its advanced analytical tools like Cost Distance and Corridor analysis, we were able to identify optimal routes that facilitate animal movement while considering ecological, social, and legal constraints.

Data Collection and Setup:

  1. Initiate New Project: Launch ArcGIS Pro and create a project titled "Wildlife Corridor Mapping."
  2. Import Geographic Data: Include base maps and regional geographic layers such as terrain, existing protected areas, and road networks from ArcGIS Online.
  3. Add Biological Data: Import data on wildlife sightings, habitat ranges of endangered species, and biological diversity indexes.
  4. Layer Organization: Arrange and categorize data layers for streamlined analysis and accessibility.


Habitat and Movement Analysis:

  1. Identify Key Habitats: Use "Select by Attributes" to highlight regions known for high biodiversity and endangered species presence.
  2. Analyze Habitat Connectivity: Apply the "Cost Distance" tool to identify areas with minimal barriers for animal movement.
  3. Map Potential Corridors: Use the "Corridor" tool to delineate paths that connect fragmented habitats while avoiding human-made barriers.
  4. Evaluate Road Impacts: Apply the "Overlay" tool to assess how existing roads interfere with natural wildlife movements.


Corridor Design and Optimization:

  1. Initial Corridor Drafting: Sketch out potential corridors using manual drawing tools based on connectivity analysis.
  2. Corridor Refinement: Utilize ecological and environmental constraints to refine corridor paths for optimal utility and minimal disruption.
  3. Stakeholder Input Integration: Gather input from local conservationists and landowners to ensure practical and mutually beneficial corridor placements.
  4. Legal Review and Compliance: Check the proposed corridors against local and national wildlife protection laws to ensure compliance.
