Urban Planning

Project Renaissance

Objective: Determine the best location for a new residential development in an urban area considering factors such as land use, accessibility to public transport, and proximity to services like schools and parks.

GIS Expert

To successfully complete this company's urban planning project, we meticulously followed a series of key steps utilizing ArcGIS Pro. We began by gathering and organizing all relevant spatial data, including land use, transportation networks, and public amenities, ensuring a solid foundation for our analysis. We then conducted comprehensive spatial analyses, such as suitability and proximity analyses, to identify the optimal location for the new residential development. Using ArcGIS Pro’s advanced visualization tools, we created detailed 3D models and interactive maps to assess and demonstrate how the proposed development would integrate into the existing urban fabric.

"GIS Guys did an amazing job. We were thoroughly impressed by the array of features and functionalities that streamlined our project from conception through to execution. We highly recommend this platform to any firm looking to leverage cutting-edge GIS technology in urban planning and development."

Data Preparation and Initial Setup:

  1. Start a New Project: Open ArcGIS Pro and create a new project named "Urban Residential Planning."
  2. Import Base Maps: Add base maps of the city from ArcGIS Online.
  3. Gather Data: Import layers for existing land use, transportation networks, public amenities (schools, parks), and environmental constraints (flood zones, protected areas).
  4. Organize Layers: Arrange the layers in a logical order and group them by category for easier management.

Spatial Analysis for Site Selection:

  1. Land Use Analysis: Use the "Select by Attributes" tool to identify parcels zoned for residential use.
  2. Proximity Analysis: Utilize the "Buffer" tool to highlight areas within a 500-meter radius of schools, parks, and public transit stops.
  3. Accessibility Analysis: Apply the "Network Analyst" tool to calculate the travel time by public transport and car to central business districts.
  4. Environmental Constraint Analysis: Use the "Intersect" tool to exclude parcels within flood zones or protected areas.
  5. Suitability Analysis: Combine the results using the "Weighted Overlay" tool to rank parcels based on their suitability for residential development.

Visualization and 3D Modeling:

  1. Create 3D Views: Convert the 2D map to a 3D scene to visualize the terrain and urban context.
  2. Add 3D Models: Import 3D models of existing buildings and proposed residential buildings to assess the fit within the existing cityscape.
  3. Adjust Visualization: Tweak the symbology and lighting to enhance the visualization of the new development within the 3D scene.

Further Analysis and Optimization:

  1. Shadow Analysis: Conduct a shadow analysis to understand the impact of new buildings on surrounding areas throughout different seasons.
  2. Traffic Impact Analysis: Model the potential traffic flow using the "Network Analyst" tool to predict impacts on local roads.
  3. Public Feedback: Integrate an interactive web map using ArcGIS Online for public feedback on the proposed site.

Throughout the project, we leveraged real-time GIS capabilities for dynamic decision-making and used Python scripts to automate repetitive tasks, enhancing efficiency. By continuously refining our approach based on stakeholder feedback, we ensured that the project outcomes were both innovative and aligned with the community’s needs and expectations.
